Derek Franson
Derek Franson – Writer/Director
After studies in arts and writing culminated in an English Literature Degree from Queen’s University, Franson immersed himself in the Vancouver film and television production scene. He quickly landed a job as an assistant animator for one season on the MTV/Nickelodeon produced cult series Ren & Stimpy. Franson then decided to focus on live-action production. Over a five-year period he worked on numerous commercials and independent films in a wide range of positions all the while honing his writing skills and studying directing techniques. This led to the development of his first feature film Comforting Skin, a project he intends to refocus on in the future.

In the meantime life has taken Franson in challenging and rewarding directions. Based on his experience developing Comforting Skin, he signed as a director with the prominent Canadian commercial house Applebox Productions in the summer of 2001 and his credits include a television spot for the Canadian Cancer Society. He spent most of 2002/2003 living in South Africa and while there he created a documentary for The Friends of Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital of Cape Town and a series of commercials for the Coppoolse & Finnlayson winery. Back in Canada, Franson also joined forces with Brainstorm Productions and a talented few within Lost Boys Studios to write and direct the music video AKamakazi for recording artist Kym Brown showcasing a murderous robotic bull and a cowboy bent on revenge.

Franson’s focus for the past few years has been the sci-fi adventure film- Smartparts. Having completed a major rewrite of the script last year, he is presently storyboarding and developing animatics for the film, as well as continuing to refine key character designs and set pieces.
